BaKIM-1 was launched on January 1st, 2022 and has a term of 33 months. Afterwards it will continue to be operated as BaKIM-2 at Smart City Bamberg. BaKIM is intended to plan both the work of the support urban arborists and urban foresters. Included primarily relies on high-resolution drone data, but also satellites and sensor data are used. This data is used with various deep neural networks (DNN) evaluated.

    Motivation and values

    What in your view defines the public interest and how does your project meet this purpose?

    Due to the man-made climate crisis, the effort required by arborists is increasing foresters. To preserve individual urban trees, tree stands and forest areas, the staff must therefore be used as efficiently as possible and the introduction of new ones. Climate trees can be tracked in order to derive future measures. Stakeholders are municipal arborists and foresters, but could also be private ones forestry communities and other forestry companies.

    How did the idea of your project come about?

    What is the goal of your project in relation to the public interest?

    The current status of the tree population is shown (tree vitality, solid wood meters, mistletoe). Changes in stocks over time are shown (decrease/increase of vitality, trees removed and new trees from lower vegetation levels, tree height increase). Other cities also use the software and control training data. Results are displayed in an app with user management systems and tasks can be assigned via these. Citizens can access individual tree data and see the estimated drought stress. We check together a possible operator system with other municipalities.
